New Delhi: Anti-corruption activist Anna Hazare's fast is in its sixth day as he demands that Parliament pass the Jan Lokpal Bill in this session of Parliament. On the other hand, social activist Aruna Roy, a member of the National Action Council (NAC) and the National Campaign for People's Right to Information (NCPRI) has come up with her own version of an effective Lokpal Bill.
Aruna Roy said, "We will present our bill to the Standing Committee. The government draft is a weak one." Unlike the Jan Lokpal, the Aruna Roy draft offers multiple institutions to address corruption.
A national anti-corruption Lokpal to probe all elected representatives including the Prime Minister. A national CVC to take action against mid-level bureaucracy.
A national judicial standards and accountability Lokpal to make judiciary appropriately accountable without compromising its independence.
A Public grievances Lokpal for an effective time-bound system to readdress citizens' grievances and a whistleblower protection Lokpal for appropriate protection of whistleblowers. In stark contrast to Anna, Aruna says it is upto the Standing Committee to present a strong draft. Arvind Kejriwal, Prashant Bhushan and Aruna Roy, once allies, now stand on different sides of the divide.
While Roy said, "Annaji is ill advised", Anna Hazare's aide Prashant Bhushan said, "everybody can present their views to Parliament."
