Janmashtami celebration

Kashi, the permanent abode of Lord Shiva, is in full preparedness to celebrate Janmashtami, the birthday of Lord Krishna, in a grand style.
While many religious institutions were busy giving final touches to various programmes and events to mark the occasion, vendors had lined up by the roads of Chowk, Banspathak and many other market places with decorative articles for the 'jhankis' (tableaux). From traditional band of sepoys to toys depicting stories of Krishna, all were ready and available in the market. Flooded with Janmashtami toys, decoratiions and plants, the market also has equal share of Krisha's attire, images, bansuri (flute), morpankhi (peacock feathers). "The entire market is fulled with all kinds of colours, sandalwood and Ashok leaves that are used in the festival," says Ram Prasad, a vendor.
"I am happy with the sales and will open my shop till late evening on Monday as well. Most of the customers drop in at the last moment also," says an elderly woman who makes and sells clay idols of Krishna.
Among the clay toys of new shapes and sizes, the steamer toy, often seen in Vishwanath Gullie, and the 'Seth-Sethani' too find some buyers here.
The 'morpankhi' is now available in the form decoratives for flower pots, pen and wall hangings. A flower pot with glittered and coloured balls attached to it with springs is the major attraction in market. A toy depicting an icecream trolley was another major attraction.
The Anna's crusade too has touched the market. 'Anna caps' and flags were also displayed and being sold briskly.
