Pakistani team to meet Anna Hazare for tips on anti-graft crusade

Social activist Anna Hazare, who led one of India's biggest mass movements against corruption, will receive a Pakistani delegation at his home in Ralegan Siddhi, Maharashtra, on Wednesday to seek his opinion on starting a similar drive in their country.
The delegation constitutes three legal experts, including former Pakistan law minister Iqbal Haider. The meeting has been organised by the NGO Sarhad.

Manish Tewari apologises in writing, Anna Hazare closes case
Congress MP and spokesman Manish Tewari, who took his party's distaste for anti-corruption crusader Anna Hazare to the public by branding him 'corrupt,' has tendered a written apology to Hazare.
Following the written apology, Hazare's lawyer Milind Pawar said in Pune that the activist asked him to treat the matter as closed. "In the wake of the written apology by Tiwari, Annaji has asked me to close the matter," Pawar told a news agency. Pawar had on September 8 slapped Tewari with a legal notice for defamation.

Kangana Ranaut desires Anna Hazare!
MUMBAI: "I desire Anna Hazare!" Bollywood actor Kangana Ranaut surprised her host Simi Garewal with this candid admission on the show India's Most Desirable.
Apparently when Kangana was asked by Simi who she thinks has redefined their status to become a symbol of desirability? She replied, "Well desirable has its own definition you know. If I have to give you a really honest answer you know and that that might just put you off, you would say you're crazy, I want to name a person, you're going to slap me on my face. I desire Anna Hazare."

Right to recall MPs impractical: CEC

NEW DELHI: Shooting down anti-corruption activist Anna Hazare's suggestion for introducing right to recall in elections, chief election commissioner S Y Quraishi on Wednesday said the move will destabilize the system and was 'impractical'.
"Right to recall is not easy in a country where candidates are voted in by lakhs of voters," he said. He feared that if the right to recall is put in place, "elections will go on happening and the entire system will destabilize".
He felt the emphasis should be rather on cleansing the election system, barring criminals from contesting polls and encouraging more people to come out and vote. He also did not favour a suggestion for the right to reject candidates in elections, saying it is "difficult" to implement. He had earlier said that the right to reject required a "bit of debate".

The delegation comprised Justice Nasir Aslam Jahid, a former judge of Pakistan's Supreme Court, and Karamat Ali, a well-known peace activist.

Who's afraid of Anna Hazare

The last two weeks of August saw India go through an unprecedented people’s movement, an Arab Spring of sorts. Maybe you have heard of the 74-year-old Anna Hazare, social activist and prime mover of a recent anti-corruption stir. Following a 288-hour fast in protest of government corruption, he is currently being touted as a Gandhi-come-again in these dark ages. It was indeed laudable that in a country where communal strife and acts of terror are frequent occurrences this protest involving overwhelming numbers was completely non-violent and peaceful.

youth made Lokpal movement a success, says Kiran Bedi
Attributing the success of the anti-corruption movement to people's participation, Team Anna member and former IPS officer Kiran Bedi on Saturday implored the young delegates at the Mind Rocks India Today Youth Summit 2011 that their support should continue so that the government is forced to legislate a strong Lokpal Bill during the winter session later this year.

Hazare asks people not to elect MPs who oppose Jan Lokpal Bill

Ralegan Sindhi, Sep 11 (PTI) Making it clear that there will be no let-up in his crusade against corruption, Anna Hazare today asked people not to vote for MPs who have opposed the Jan Lokpal Bill in the next general elections and "gherao" their houses even as he announced plans for a nationwide yatra including states where assembly polls are due. "Watch the MPs on television and note those, who have opposed the Jan Lokpal bill in Parliament, and later 'gherao' their houses chanting bhajans in a non-violent protest,"

Anna books in demand

Anna Hazare's win does not end with his fast. The 9th National Book Fair had a glimpse of his fan following on Saturday. Known as the 'revolutionary man' among the bibliophiles, the book lovers did not waste a minute to pick up books on Anna Hazare.

Anna Hazare’s Campaign

Anna Hazare’s Campaign against Corruption in India

The campaign against corruption led by Anna Hazare in India has given rise to a heated debate on the Left, with some seeing it as progressive while others insist it is Right-wing; even the outcome of the campaign thus far is contested. This article attempts to examine the Jan Lokpal Bill (JLB) for which the campaign is being fought, those who have framed it, and the crowds that were mobilised, in order to arrive at some conclusions regarding its political character.

Pratibha, daughter of L.K. Advani, has recently produced a very impressive documentary titled Tiranga, on the history of our national flag. She might need to update it a bit. Because never in its eight-decade history has the Tricolour been made to work as hard as lately, since it became the standard of the Anna movement. You have lately seen it waved from the windows of cars, from motorcycles that whizzed past you on your city’s streets, you have seen it on protesters’ caps, shirts, foreheads and even on the cheeks of the two little girls who offered Anna nariyal-pani to break his fast.

Lyngdoh supports Anna Hazare

Supporting Anna Hazare's movement for a strong Lokpal Bill, former chief election commissioner J M Lyngdoh on Friday advocated an independent body to handle corruption cases and said its jurisdiction should extend to the Prime Minister.

"We need a Anna Hazare kind of a system to handle corruption...Everyone, including the Prime Minister, should be brought under the jurisdiction of the anti-graft body. We need an independent body to decide whether they have done any wrong," he said at a panel discussion on 'Governance has lost relevance in today's India' here.

Anna Hazare casts his spell on young minds, literally

Three teenagers left their homes in Delhi and travelled more than 1,250km to Ralegan Siddhi in Ahmednagar district to meet their inspiration — Anna Hazare.
This incident speaks volumes of the impact the anti-corruption crusader and his agitation has had on young minds. Pabhat Kumar, 13, Chandan Matokumar, 14, and Tannu Kumar, 16, live in the slums at Delhi.
“These children were selling flags at the Ramlila Maidan in Delhi when Hazare was on fast. They used to hear Anna speak and were inspired by him. I was amazed that even after a month they could recall Anna’s speech verbatim,” Shyam Asawa, an advocate and a Hazare supporter, told DNA.

Anna Hazare rules out joining politics

Ending speculation,

RALEGAN SIDDHI: Anti-corruption crusader Anna Hazare on Wednesday ruled out joining politics or his movement taking a political turn.

"Absolutely not. I am taking extreme care to keep the anti-corruption movement free of politics. There is absolutely no such possibility," the 74-year-old activist told PTI in an interview.
He was replying to a question whether his movement against corruption for a Jan Lokpal Bill could slowly take political hues following the recent announcement of Team Anna asking people to vote out MPs opposed to their version of the law in the next Parliament elections.

Meet Pakistan's very own Anna Hazare

India and Pakistan both share the dubious distinction of suffering from the debilitating problem of corruption. This menace has not only crippled Pakistan's economy but also hampered all kinds of developmental activities in the country.
India recently witnessed a massive movement against corruption, led by activist Anna Hazare and supported by thousands of Indians.

In sharp contrast, Pakistan's citizens are currently in a state of despair about the scourge of corruption, says anti-graft activist Raja Jahangir Akhtar.

Influenced by Hazare's fight against corruption, the 68-year-old social activist has also started an anti-corruption movement in Pakistan. He has declared a war on graft and has been on an indefinite hunger strike since Monday in Islamabad.
In an interview with Tahir Ali, Raja Jahangir says that he is determined to mobilise the masses against corruption
What is the aim of your movement?
I have waged a battle for the past 48 years to bring about positive changes to the poor economic situation in Pakistan. For my candid views on the country's economy, I was put behind bars many times. A military court even awarded me a jail term of one year, but I never surrendered and continued my struggle.
Although fighting corruption was not my first priority, I decided to bring an end the burgeoning corruption in Pakistan after witnessing the successful anti-graft movement led by Indian social activist Anne Hazare.
Do you think the present political leadership is responsible for the economic crisis?
I am totally disappointed about Pakistan's acute economic crisis. The pathetic and insensitive attitude of the political leadership about this grave economic situation is more disappointing. I have kicked off the movement as a protest against the present political leadership.
Why has corruption flourished so much in Pakistan?
Corruption is bound to flourish in a culture that encourages the display of affluence without any regard about how the wealth has been obtained. Lack of accountability plays a crucial role in the promotion of bribery and resistance to any form of reform.
How long will you continue your hunger strike and how hopeful are you about the success of your struggle?
We are striving to pass an anti-corruption law in Parliament. I am currently on a hunger strike and soon other people will also join me. If the government doesn't pay heed to our demand of fighting corruption, I will continue the hunger strike until my death. It is a very difficult job to mobilise Pakistan's masses but I am hopeful that one day they will support me.
Anne Hazare mobilised thousands of people in India while your supporters are few; what do you think is the reason for this?
In Pakistan, people live in a state of despair as they believe that no one can change the current situation. They have lost all hope about corruption ever being eradicated. The people of India don't think that corruption has gone beyond control and corrupt elements can't be eliminated. That's why they are supporting Anne Hazare.
At the same time, the Indian Parliament understood their sentiments and adopted a resolution. But in Pakistan, there is no section of the administration untouched by the corruption, so there is no consensus on the accountability bill.
Is there any solution to resolve the current economic crisis of Pakistan?
My suggestion is that we can salvage our economy by cutting down the size of our army, as we don't have any external threats at the moment. Another way to meet our economic challenges is to end our confrontations with India and Afghanistan.

Anna Hazare's movement: A case study in management

Akshay Mathur
There is an underlying reason as to why India's anti-corruption movement has garnered immense support in such a short span of time: it is a highly-efficient management model. The right mix of marketing, motivation, operations and service is spearheading the process, reports Gateway House
It is not often that you can draw lessons in management from a mass public initiative. I went to Azad Maidan in Mumbai in August to join the thousands others in the fight against corruption.

differences with Team Anna can be sorted out, denies being govt's mole
Activist Swami Agnivesh on Friday broke his silence on the allegations of him being a government mole in Team Anna until he separated from the civil society last month. He said he would like to meet Anna Hazare to clear the doubts about him.

People's power - Anna Hazare was not the first

The Magna Carta
In 1215, fed up with King John losing his lands, men and money in France, the barons of England made a deal with him. They wanted to protect their liberties and privileges while limiting the king's powers. It was the first document that English subjects forced on their king. Three of its clauses remain part of the country's unwritten constitution.
Women's suffrage
Women in Europe had been demanding the right to vote since the 19th century. In England, by 1914, the movement turned violent, with window-smashings and arson attacks. World War I, however, put a halt to demands, as the men went off to the warfront and more than a million women took up their jobs.

Team Anna's agitation isn''t the first to force changes in the laws of the land. 1918, when the war was over, the government granted women above the age of 30 the right to vote. In 1928, the right was extended to women above 21. It, of course, remains debateable if the women's movement proved successful or if the government simply appreciated the women's war efforts.

Priyanka Chopra does an Anna Hazare

Priyanka Chopra, it seems, is carrying her penchant for method acting as far as it can go.

For her previous roles in Ashutosh Gowariker's What's Your Raashee and Vishal Bhardwaj's Saat Khoon Maaf, Priyanka gained and lost weight so drastically that it affected her metabolism and health severely.

Now for Anurag Basu's Barfee, last week in Ooty, Priyanka has done an Anna Hazare, so to speak.
