Who benefited from cash-for-votes? Ask BJP, Left
In its first reaction on the arrest of Amar Singh and two former MPs of the party in connection with the cash-for-votes scam, the BJP, Tuesday, tried to corner the UPS government over its role in the entire episode.
Party spokesperson Rajiv Pratap Rudy said, “The foremost question arises as to who were the beneficiaries of this (buying votes) action.”
“Wasn’t the UPA government and Dr Manmohan Singh the beneficiaries? How come the beneficiaries are not in the picture?” Rudy said.
“Nothing has been raised against them. This is a major charge which has not been clarified by the government,” he added.
Interestingly, Rudy also goaded Amar Singh to speak out the “truth” about the entire episode.
“This is the right time for Amar Singh to say the truth…for whom did he work towards saving the government?” Rudy said.
CPI(M) polit buro member Brinda Karat has also reacted on similar lines.”On whose behest did Amar Singh act needs to be probed,” she said.
Karat said that Amar Singh was not heading a government, he was acting for someone. “It was an open secret then that MPs were being approached with money,” she pointed out.
On the other hand, CPI leader Gurudas Dasgupta wants a clarification from none other than Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.
“Government must clarify and the government does not mean anybody but the Prime Minister, he must clarify,” he said.
“If these people would not have been there then the government would have lost,” he stressed.
However, the Congress has rejected the demand for a clarification from the government.
Parliamentary affairs Minister Pawan Kumar Bansal has made it clear that the government has nothing to do with the cash-for-votes probe and that Prime Minister won’t issue any clarification over the same.
